Getting ready for winter . . . in slo-mo

You can blame it on inefficiency if you want to, but I prefer to cite the Northeast's unseasonably warm fall weather as the culprit. After all, the temperature hit 55 degrees here in Augusta, Maine, as recently as yesterday.

It was just over a week ago that my wife Liz and I finally removed the bedroom and living-room air conditioners and tucked them into storage for the winter. Nov. 13 was by far the latest date on which we have tackled this end-of-summer chore, which we usually wrap up by early October, if not sooner. At this rate, the rest of the storm windows should be in place by . . . Valentine's Day?
