I love my adopted state of Maine (even though some of the locals refer to my fellow Massachusetts natives as Massholes). My wife and I have lived here for 26 years now, and we like it just fine, thanks to the breathtaking natural beauty, the quality of life, the lack of affectation, the relatively low crime rate, the laid-back lifestyle and the state’s generally progressive politics (our wacky governor notwithstanding).
After a quarter of a century here, I think we know the place pretty well. Maine is part of New England, after all. We're still on our home turf, if not in our native state. But every once in a while, something happens in largely rural Maine to remind me that, in some ways, we're much farther from urban, thickly settled Massachusetts than the maps would suggest. Such was the case a few days ago when the following news headline and lead appeared on the web site of the Kennebec Journal here in Augusta.
Saturday ceremony marks Readfield sidewalk completion
READFIELD -- It took several years of preparations, and then a few weeks longer than anticipated to build, but there is finally a sidewalk running through the center of town.
