Martha reminds us that the emotions of dogs run deep

My wife Liz and I are not the only ones coping with the loss, last Thursday, of our beloved 14-year-old chocolate lab Aquinnah, aka Quinn. Four-legged members of the family are grieving as well.

Teddy, our normally gregarious Maine coon cat, was very fond of Quinn, and has been somewhat withdrawn and subdued in recent days.

But Martha, our 11-year-old pit bull mix, has had an even harder time of it. She developed a bad urinary tract infection after Quinn was euthanized, and she became so manic that night that we had to take her to the emergency veterinary clinic in Lewiston, Maine, 30 miles away.

She’s doing much better now, thanks to various medications. She’s eating and sleeping well, and taking pleasure from her walks. But she still wanders around the house searching for her missing “big brother," with whom Martha has lived since she was only eight weeks old, often sleeping on Quinn's back or by his side.

A day or two after Quinn's passing, Liz says, Martha looked at her with the most heartbreaking sadness in her eyes. The emotions of dogs run deep.
