The debut of Norman Rockwell's "Four Freedoms"

We're all familiar with the rap against the late Norman Rockwell - that he was a fine illustrator, but not a fine artist; that he offered an idealized, overly sentimental image of American life; that his work oozes nostalgia. No matter. I've always admired his art, and today is a good day to take note of it.

On this day in 1943, The Saturday Evening Post published the first of four Rockwell paintings collectively known as the Four Freedoms, which took their inspiration from a speech by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The other paintings in the series appeared in the magazine on Feb. 27, March 6 and March 13 of that year. God knows we could do more to safeguard each of these freedoms, but at least they were - and remain - central to our ideals as Americans.

If you're ever in Stockbridge, Mass., stop in at the Norman Rockwell Museum for a taste of Americana. You may even leave hungry for more.

Freedom from Want
Freedom from Fear
Freedom to Worship
Freedom of Speech
