New England's National Historic Landmarks: Rhode Island


The National Register of Historic Places contains more than 85,000 sites, but only some 2,500 of them have been listed as National Historic Landmarks. New England is home to hundreds of these particularly significant structures, objects and places.

RHODE ISLAND
Marble House, Newport


Designed for William Kissam Vanderbilt and built between 1888 and 1892, this was one of the earliest Beaux Arts houses in the U.S. It helped begin the trend of building mansions in Newport.
