New England's National Historic Landmarks: Rhode Island


The National Register of Historic Places contains more than 85,000 sites, but only some 2,500 of them have been listed as National Historic Landmarks. New England is home to hundreds of these particularly significant structures, objects and places.

Vernon House, Newport


The Vernon House probably dates back to the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. During the Revolutionary War, it served as the headquarters of the Comte de Rochambeau, commander of the French forces stationed in Newport.
