RHODE ISLAND Battle of Rhode Island Site, Portsmouth
The Revolutionary War's Battle of Rhode Island began on Aug. 9, 1778, when Continental troops and militia prepared to attack the British while a French fleet blocked the small British naval force in Narragansett Bay. When a larger British fleet arrived, a hurricane (August 13–14) severely damaged both fleets and the French sailed to Boston for repairs. After a twelve-day siege, the Americans were forced to withdraw, leaving the British in place.
