New England's National Historic Landmarks: Rhode Island


The National Register of Historic Places contains more than 85,000 sites, but only some 2,500 of them have been listed as National Historic Landmarks. New England is home to hundreds of these particularly significant structures, objects and places.

Hunter House, Newport


The original portion of Hunter House was built in 1748. During the Revolutionary War, the Loyalist owner fled. In 1780, it served as the headquarters of a French admiral when French forces were stationed in Newport.
