Happy birthday, Canada!

Today is Canada Day, which commemorates the creation of Canada on July 1, 1867, with the passage of the British North America Act.

If, like me, you grew up in a Franco-American household in New England, the grandson of French-Canadian immigrants, and if, like me, you learned the American, Canadian and French national anthems at a bilingual grade school, then Canada Day is worth more than passing notice. Even here in the United States, where our own birthday is just around the corner.

I've always felt that "O Canada" is a truly beautiful national anthem, especially when sung in both of Canada's official languages, English and French, the latter being the language in which it was originally written. For some Americans who have Canadian roots, it's not just a musical prelude to a hockey game!
