Despite what you've read, France is not one of our oldest allies

Considering what France has gone through in recent days, this is a small point, but let's set the historical record straight anyway. France is not one of our oldest allies.

It IS our oldest ally.

The Marquis de Lafayette, great as he was, was just the tip of the iceberg. Without the large and costly influx of French supplies, arms, troops and naval power during the American Revolution, we'd be flying the Union Jack and staring at Queen Elizabeth's mug whenever we opened our wallets.
