Don't believe everything (or maybe anything?) you see on TV

The Boston Globe reported this week that CBS, which broadcast Boston’s famed Fourth of July fireworks display last Monday night, doctored the presentation by superimposing some of the city’s most prominent landmarks on the fireworks.

The result, the Globe said, was a program that offered “great views, until you consider that they were physically impossible.” Among the most egregious offenses: altered video showing fireworks exploding behind Fenway Park and the Massachusetts State House, where there were, in fact, no fireworks to be seen in real life.

The Globe quoted David Mugar, executive producer of the show, as saying the alterations were above board because the program was entertainment, not news.

“Absolutely, we’re proud to show scenes from our city,’’ Mugar told the newspaper. “We were able to highlight great places in Boston, historical places with direct ties to the Fourth. So we think it was a good thing.’’

Looking back on it, I did think that shot of the Boston fireworks as seen from the Taj Mahal stretched credulity a wee bit.
