The chow time craziness of our hungry critters

The jittery-looking pooch trying to get into my wife Liz’s lap is Martha. She’s an 11-year-old pit bull mix, but she acts like she’s much younger.

Martha shares the house with four cats: Teddy, Leo, Clara and Annie. Canine and felines live peaceably, except at meal time. The cats eat first, and as they try to get past Martha en route to the kitchen, she tries to chase them back upstairs.

That’s because Martha believes meals are a zero-sum game. In her view, there’s only a limited amount of food to go around, and the more the cats eat, the less that leaves for her.

The good news is that Martha has no desire to actually hurt the cats, who always manage to run / slink past her. And everyone always gets enough to eat because, Martha’s opinion notwithstanding, cats and dogs do not eat the same food.
