New England's National Historic Landmarks: Rhode Island


The National Register of Historic Places contains more than 85,000 sites, but only some 2,500 of them have been listed as National Historic Landmarks. New England is home to hundreds of these particularly significant structures, objects and places.

Old State House, Newport


The Old Colony House (aka, Old State House) was completed in 1741. It was the meeting place for the colonial legislature. As recently as the early 20th century, the state legislature alternated its sessions between this location and Providence.
