New England's National Historic Landmarks: Massachusetts


The National Register of Historic Places contains more than 85,000 sites, but only some 2,500 of them have been listed as National Historic Landmarks. New England is home to hundreds of these particularly significant structures, objects and places.

Gardner-Pingree House, Salem


Salem merchant John Gardner had this Federalist-style house built in 1804–05. It was the site of a notorious murder in 1841 that inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe.
