When it comes to New Year's Eve, I'm a conspiracy buff.
My theory is that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in league with local chambers in selected cities across the country, hires phony revelers to pack "first-night" festivities. These seemingly spontaneous crowds of paid partygoers attract media attention, creating the illusion that the key to celebrating New Year's Eve is to head downtown and open your wallet.
But it's a tough sell.
Most people are snug and warm in their cozy homes in the hours leading up to midnight, and they have no intention of venturing forth into the cold, dark night. They will try to stay awake until the new year rolls in, but probably without success, and certainly without doling out any cash, except possibly for a bottle of bubbly or a six-pack of beer.
As for me, I probably won't drink anything more intoxicating than water tonight. (Okay, if I'm feeling especially festive I may have a beer. Yeah, one beer. I'm a real party animal.) But either way, I'm sure to be in slumberland when the ball drops.
