Graffiti "artists" . . . they're anything but

Graffiti "artists" would have us believe they are just that: artists. But I remain skeptical. Here’s one reason. The Associated Press reported recently that a new Rhode Island highway mural by a renowned children's author and illustrator has been defaced by graffiti.

The mural along Interstate 95 in Providence is one of two highway murals designed by David Macaulay, who attended the Rhode Island School of Design. Macaulay has written and illustrated many books, including Cathedral and Mill, as well as illustrating books by other authors, including The Way Things Work.

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation is quoted as saying the incident is disheartening. It certainly is. And it raises a question. Why would one “artist” deface the work of another? Could it be that such vandals are no more than delusional, destructive and pretentious posers?
