When it comes to conjuring up pleasant images of New England, is there anything more iconic than a lighthouse? (Okay, Fenway Park is right up there, but even America's oldest major-league ballpark isn't as evocative as our coastal sentinels.)
So it's noteworthy that the U.S. Postal Service plans to release a set of five stamps in July commemorating our beloved Portland Head Light here in Maine, as well as lighthouses in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The Postal Service says in a release that "these five lighthouses are among the oldest in the U.S., and each is on the National Register of Historic Places. Boston Harbor Light is also a National Historic Landmark."
(Sorry, Vermont. You're a beautiful state and Lake Champlain is a gem, but it is, after all, only a lake. I think the technical term for your landlocked condition is ocean envy.)
