My new role models . . . no worse than the old ones

It’s clear, if you’ve been paying attention, that we can’t use our military “leaders” (see David Petraeus & Co.) as role models anymore. They seem more interested in anatomical incursions than the military kind, if you get my drift.

Equally untrustworthy: corporate execs (see Kenneth Lay & Co.), media bigwigs (see Rupert Murdoch & Co.), and perverts and enablers cloaked as clergymen (see Cardinal Bernard Law & Co.). As for politicians (see a list that is far too long to mention here), we’ve known for more than 200 years that they are a laughable bunch of poltroons (with a few exceptions), so they never were in contention.

From here on out, then, I’m going to place my faith in the only group of high-profile Americans who still deserve it, thanks to their unwavering devotion to a strict code of conduct that is rock-solid. I speak, of course, of casino moguls, those slick cynics whose goal in life is to enrich themselves by separating the stupid from their money.

We know what they are. They know what they are. And they make no bones about it. Which counts for a lot these days. Because as bad as they may be, at least they aren’t hypocrites.
