Looking to the sky for solace in a mad, mad world

At times, it does seem as if the world has gone mad, what with crazed gunmen on the prowl, partisan gridlock in Washington and weather extremes that probably portend a worsening environmental catastrophe in the years ahead. Scary stuff, and that’s just the tip of the (melting) iceberg.

But as I strolled along our riverside trail here in Augusta, Maine, yesterday morning, I spotted two bald eagles perched side by side atop an unusually tall evergreen a few yards from the Kennebec River. It would have been hard to miss them, actually, what with the gaggle of walkers and runners who had stopped ahead of me to gaze upward at the majestic duo.

Awestruck strangers marveled at the sight, and for one brief moment, the beauty of the natural world brought a fleeting sense of harmony to a sliver of humanity.
