My wife Liz and I were reminded last week that the canine birthday is quite different from its human counterpart. Unlike a person, a dog does not know when he was born, and so cannot really celebrate his birth. The very concept of a birthday is (presumably) foreign to a pooch.
But the dog has a leg up, as it were, if his litter entered the world around midnight.
That’s just what happened with our chocolate lab Aquinnah. Liz and I knew that Aquinnah was born in December 2005, but it wasn’t until we checked the breeder’s papers in search of a more precise date that we learned his litter was whelped overnight, starting on Dec. 3 and continuing into Dec. 4.
No one knows on which side of the witching hour our guy made his debut, so Aquinnah effectively has two birthdays. Now that's a twist on the big day that I could embrace.
Happy double b-day, big guy!
