The literate cat: "W" is for Walter

It hasn’t happened in quite a while, but occasionally our cat Teddy will turn on the Bose radio in the living room in the middle of the night by walking across the on/off button on top of the unit. We nicknamed him Ted Van Ted after I awoke about 1 a.m. one day to the sound of Van Morrison blaring downstairs, thanks to Theodore.

When I got up at my usual hour Friday morning, it was a woman’s voice that wafted up from the living room. And she was speaking, not singing. As I staggered down the stairs, wondering if a chatty female intruder awaited, I found Walter, another of our four cats, listening to a CD of “K" is for Killer by Sue Grafton, which was playing on my wife’s open MacBook Pro.

Walt is a taciturn, stoical fellow who has developed a quiet dignity in the face of his medical problems. (He has to take thyroid meds twice daily.) Although it's hard to tell with a cat as reserved as Walt, he was a bit more animated than usual when I found him that morning. My theory is that he enjoyed the sound of the narrator's voice, which is a more plausible explanation than claiming he was really into the book.
