It was 25 degrees out when I walked over to the convenience store at 6 a.m. Sunday to buy a couple of newspapers. I was wearing a heavy coat, winter hat and gloves, but by the time I got there I was too chilled to say much of anything clever. So I greeted the clerk with an obvious question.
“Cold enough for you?” I asked.
“Oh yeah,” he replied with a smile, as if recalling something humorous. “What’s really comical is when someone comes in here in weather like this dressed in shorts and a T-shirt and says, ‘Boy, it’s cold outside!’”
“Did that happen today?”
“Yup.”
Common sense: so useful, yet so uncommon.
