An impractical guide to making adulthood safer

As I a sauntered down our riverside walking trail the other day, I saw a small child who unwittingly displayed how some adults would love to go through life, if only they could. The little guy, who looked like he was three or four years ago, was cruising along on a bright yellow bicycle as his mother watched. He wore a helmet, and his bike had training wheels.

What if such safety features were standard issue for adults as well? Imagine if something as simple as a helmet could protect us from getting banged up by career woes, troubled relationships, debilitating disease and the pain of loss. Training wheels for adults would kept us upright, offering stability and self-confidence as we careen along. Then again, sailing through life shielded from its scrapes and bruises wouldn't really be living at all, now, would it?
